Coastal Chic at Coquillage

The French word for “seashell”, Coquillage, is also the name of a unique accessory and home furniture boutique with a coastal casual vibe in Downtown Sarasota. “European coastal chic is what I call it,” says owner Melanie Ann Denicourt.

The distinctive style of Coquillage is a blend of Old World elegance and the casual beach lifestyle. Bleached woods, weathered antique finishes and muted tones of greys, taupes, blues and greens create an almost ethereal, serene atmosphere. While the Coquillage style has a casual feel, it is more refined than the popular shabby chic look. The furniture pieces appear to be treasured antiques rather than flea market finds. Surprisingly, their furniture is not old but, actually, new reproductions. Many of Denicourt’s suppliers use finishing techniques passed down for generations, which accounts for the authentic, aged patinas.

This Fall, Coquillage will introduce a new store on Palm Avenue, also in Downtown Sarasota, where they will have more space to showcase fine linens, tabletops and furniture. Also, coming soon, they will introduce a new website,, to extend their unique style and love of the coastal lifestyle online. Coquillage is located at 1515 Main Street, Sarasota.
